learning perl/python

        quick question:
        when you learned perl (or python, or TCL/TK, or shell scripts), how
did you learn it? on the job? or did you take a class? or just by osmosis
from being around other users?

        I'm debating asking the boss to send me off to class for perl; and
wondering if I might do better (at least for the admin scripting I need), to
just try to teach myself.
