Ip address timouts

Does anyone know how long my IP address will stay the same with Mediaone
on a two-way cable modem?

I have my web server up and I can access it from the net with a
different computer but the address will change right? 

The weird thing is, I decided to replace the Red Hat install on the
server with Slackware 7 and the IP address is still the same as it was
on the Red Hat system. How can this be? Doesn't DHCP re-negociate an IP
address every so often?
