Dave,

DHCP servers can be configured a number of different ways (take a look
at the man page for dhcpd or at the DHCP RFC at
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1533.html), some options being lease length
(which may be very long) and with some servers you can have the lease
length automatically regenerate everytime an address request is made.
This means it is possible for you to have what seems to be a static IP
address, even though you get your IP address through DHCP, if you
connect on a semi-regular basis. HTH,
