lsof requires that you have the correct file for the kernel being
used.  did you update your file when you compiled in the new
kernel?  it can be found in /usr/src/linux after a compiliation.  try this
out.  i'm not sure if it does/doesnt work with 2.2.x though, as i am still
using 2.0.36, at least until i can find time to upgrade.  anyway, give this a
