Re: [TCLUG:4167] DIALD & IP Forwarding

Yes, I am trying to connect on any IP network traffic. I do not have a static IP so and I only have a 200 hour limit so being connected 24/7 is not possible.

thanks.
Paul.

Hi Paul,

I'm still clueless on a lot of this stuff but my setup works nicely... I'm using pppd not diald, and my connection is up 95% of the time... It does drop out about 4 times a day (thanks ISP),  but pppd happily reconnects, gets DHCP each time and masquearades my network behind whatever address it gets... I never have the first packet problem from any of my machines.. sometimes, if I'm in the middle of a game from windoze it'll even reconnect me to the gameserver and continue on without time outs or booting me from the gameserver etc.

Are you trying to setup your link so it only connects when there is traffic to be sent or are you trying to have it reconnect if it drops out?

Cheers,
Marty

Subject: [TCLUG:4167] DIALD & IP Forwarding

Has anybody had any luck setting up a network with DIALD and IP Forwarding. I have got everything going except for one small annoying problem. On the first connection with a WINDOWS client. the first packet seems to get lost and the user is forced to stop the request (either FTP, TELNET, HTTP) and start over again. the second request runs fine. I have read the docs for DIALD and it seems that this is ALWAYS going to be a problem if youy have a DYNAMIC IP with your provider. There MUST be a way around this! Has anybody had any experience with this? Should I maybe use something other that DIALD? I am not at 2.2 yet so I cannot use IPCHAIN.

I am just looking for general info now, but if someone wants to see my conf files, I will gladly send them.

Thanks,
Paul.
