gmc closes down X

I'm using windowmaker as my wm and I have an xterm link to X (close that
xterm, lose X). When I run gmc it works fine, but when I goto exit and say
yes to close and yes again it shuts down X. When I do a killal gmc it
terminates fine and leaves X. Why is this and is there a work around?
