Are you sure you need to have Linux in the first 1024 cylinders?  I have one
box here with Linux installed on the second drive (although it is in the
first partition).  I also have another box with Linux installed in an
extended partition that starts at about the 3.7 gig mark.  I just put LILO
in the boot record of the partition and use BootMagic or System Commander to
boot it.

You don't need to install Windows first if you use a program like BootMagic
although I usually do.  I just partition the hard drive with DOS Fdisk and
leave enough room to make a Linux partition when I am installing Linux.  The
newest version of Partition Magic (4.0) is a real timesaver when you are
installing multiple operating systems.  It comes with BootMagic,  it is
Linux friendly and also works with FAT32.
