SAMBA problems

I'm trying to get SAMBA configured on our new fileserver; and it
refuses to start.
        /var/log/samba/log.smb tells me:
 [1999/09/24 14:18:26, 1] smbd/server.c:main(614)
  smbd version 2.0.3 started.

unable to read file /etc/MACHINE.SID. Error was No such file or directory
[1999/09/24 14:18:26, 0] smbd/server.c:main(644)
ERROR: Samba cannot create a SAM SID.

anyone know what's going wrong here?
I'd like to get this solved ASAP. our programmer is here for some software
upgrades; and he's something of a Linux skeptic. this will really be useful
for some tests of ours. :)
