Problems with sshd
Dear List,
I usually use ssh rpms to install sshd, but it seems that this practice
has come around to bite me on the a__ (now that I'd like to install it
on a Solaris 2.6 box). I compiled ssh and utilities, and they work fine,
but there might be something I don't understand about running sshd (and
perhaps that is an understatement). In hopes that one of you will know
what I missed (or what I am not doing), I post this question here. Why
won't sshd start up (or give me a better error message)? Here is what I
get when I try to run sshd as root:
# ls ssh*
ssh ssh-add ssh-agent ssh-askpass ssh-keygen sshd
# ./sshd
error: fatal: Could not load host key: /etc/ssh_host_key. Check path
and permissions.
# ls -al /etc/ssh*
-rw------- 1 root other 525 Sep 24 11:01 /etc/ssh_host_key
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 329 Sep 24 11:01
/etc/ssh_host_key.pub
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 0 Sep 24 11:30 /etc/sshd_config
I read through the man pages and it mentioned having a sshd_config file
and what the defaults were, and since the defaults were fine with me, I
made an empty sshd_config file so sshd would stop complaining about that
problem (and it has). I created ssh_host_key and ssh_host_key.pub with
ssh-keygen and put them in the proper location, but I still get this
error. I have changed the permissions on ssh_host_key, to no avail. It
still doesn't start.
Thank you in advance for any helpful comments you might have,
Troy
