startx > /tmp/startx.debug 2>&1

that will output both standard input and standard error to the file
/tmp/startx.debug.

I also recomend using Xconfigurator.. or checking the linux laptop web
page (can't remember the URL off the top of my head)  which has
pre-configed XF86Config files for hundreds of laptops
