I recall dealing with this some time ago, and learning that one
solution was to ensure that the kernel code was as close to the
"front" of the drive as possible.
In the last machine I set up, I used the following partitions:
/dev/hda1 /boot 50 Mb
/dev/hda2 / 500 Mb
/dev/hda3 <swap> 128 Mb
/dev/hda4 <extended>
/dev/hda5 /usr 1 Gb
etc....
Since the kernels get installed into /boot, this makes sure they
are well into the range accessable to even the most confused BIOS.
I am pretty sure that 50 Mb is more than enough, too.
Again, others, feel free to flesh out the details, or even correct
me if I'm being misleading! I would like to think that I am open
to being corrected...
