In my experience, the very simple answer to this is "YES". Linux's use of
standard protocols (SMTP, POP, IMAP, SMB*, NFS, etc.) makes it about as
cross-platform as anything you can get.

<bitch mode="debian">Debian.</bitch> Ridiculously simple in-place upgrades
(without rebooting!).

Just be sure to check the Hardware-HOWTO and the latest (stable) kernel
sources for what hardware is supported.

* well, SMB isn't a standard protocol. but it's (unfortunately) ubiquitous.
