Sounds like you could have an incompatible bios version (4.3), or you may
need to do something to get around a problem in the ATI Rage Pro LT
chipset video chipset (which also affects other models, like my HP
Omnibook 7100)

Another option is to type "startx", use the function keys on the notebook
to turn the laptop to "External display only", hit <enter>, wait for
XFree86 to start, then use the function keys to turn the internal LCD back
on...
