Here's how my partitions are set up, as per Debian's guidelines with my
own spin:

hda1	Win95 FAT32	1027.60	/mnt/dosc
hda2	Linux Swap	47.07	swap
hda3	Linux ext2	517.72	/
hda5	Linux ext2	1537.48	/usr
hda6	Linux ext2	800.12	/var
hda7	Linux ext2	1537.48	/home
hda8	Win95 FAT32	1011.91	/mnt/dosd

So I've got /, /usr, /var, and /home each on a separate partition. You may
also want to create a /tmp partition, a /usr/local partition, a /var/www
partition (or equivalent web directory), etc. according to your usage. But
for a typical workstation the above system works quite nicely.
