Newbie Telnet Problem Follow-up and Thanks

Special thanks to Chris for his insight.

I called RedHat today, since I'm still eligible for phone support. They had 
me install the Pumps rpm, saying that it would correct the problem. It did 
not. I called back and they basically took a non-commital approach, saying 
that it most likely was related to DNS lookup as Chris suggested. They 
offered no further solution. I told them that I did not have the problem 
with RH5.0 and they agreed that it was something newly added in later versions.

I'm going to keep an eye on this and see if I can resolve it. It could very 
well be that the NTServer (blush) which is also on the wire is part of the 
picture. There's enough activity in the Linux newsgroups on this general 
issue that something should turn up. In the meantime, pecking client 
entries into etc/hosts is a workable patch since I have so few clients to 
deal with.
