I'd be happy to answer any questions on it.  It's really quite simple
once you get things set up right.  The first time through is always the
worst, though, especially when you run into autoconf-related problems.

Right, that does make more sense now.  If your _WM_ crashes and it's the
last thing in your .xinitrc (which you just posted), that will also
bring down your X session (gracefully, rather than by crashing it, as
I'd erroneously assumed before).

So yep, it does sound like something in GNOME is tickling a bug in your
version of FVWM2.  Upgrading FVWM2 might also solve your problems.
