Dead KDE, how do I hide the body.

Howdy all.

SuSE 6.1 KDE 1.1.2

A while back I moved to SuSE 6.1. I used to be a Slackware fan (Might still
go back)

anyway I notice a rather odd trait, of KDE and SuSE. When KDE drops out from
either a problem with a program or just time. IT completely locks up my
console. I can still use a dumb term or telnet in and kill PIDs but I never do
get the console back. (That's not really true. From an other term I can
restart X and it works fine. If I leae that new session of X I am back right
to the dead screen I was before) Usually that screen is my desktop and the
app that was running at the time. It doesn't seem to matter which app or apps
are running and theproblem is rare...

If I go through and try to kill all the X pids I still can't get back to the
console....

ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't help me either.

Anyone else have this problem or have a direction they can point me in
