Sure no problem.  That's exactly what I'm doing.  I've got a server
with a modem in it that is always connected to the internet.  It
forwards all requests through ppp0 and does all internal stuff through
eth0.  All the machines in the apartment have their default gateway set
to the machine with the modem in it.
