While going through and setting things up like you suggested I noticed a
little note in menuconfig that pointed me to Documentation/ide.txt.  In
there they made reference to a script (/usr/src/linux/srcipts/MAKEDEV.ide)
that recreated the proper IDE entries in /dev.  I ran it and all is happy!
It's amazing what you can learn when you RTFM!!
