One trick i found useful in the past is to launch an xterm (assuming you
have X on the machine you're logging in from) from the telnet session and
then use TERM=xterm in the xterm window.  Worked almost every time.
Basically i was too lazy (and partially ignorant) to go  messing with
termcaps.  (Of course if you don't have 'xterm' in your termcap already,
this idea is toast.)

Worth a try.
